Abstract
This chapter explores the intersection of Indian environmental jurisprudence and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We critically examine how Indian green jurisprudence aligns with the global sustainability framework outlined by the SDGs. Through a systematic analysis of legislative measures, policy actions and judicial pronouncements, the chapter critically assesses India’s progress towards achieving environmental sustainability, highlighting both successes and shortcomings. The critique identifies key areas where Indian environmental policies and laws have effectively promoted sustainable development, such as biodiversity conservation, pollution control, and climate action. However, it also underscores significant gaps and challenges, including issues of enforcement, socio-economic disparities, and the balancing of developmental and environmental priorities. Through a nuanced exploration of case studies and legal principles, the authors argue that while India has made commendable strides, there is a critical need for a more integrated and robust approach to fully realize the SDGs. The authors have attempted to render robust suggestions for strengthening legal frameworks and policy implementation to enhance India’s environmental governance. A coherent and synergistic effort involving government, judiciary, civil society, and the private sector is the need of the hour to foster a sustainable and equitable future.
